Abstract
Soils are complex and dynamic systems that perform essential functions contributing to the
sustainability of terrestrial ecosystems and the support of life. They participate in a wide variety of ecosystem functions/services (e.g., Baveye et al., 2016), including those related to the production of biomass, the regulation of carbon and nutrient cycles, and the regulation of water resources and air quality, due to their filtering and buffering capacity.
